NEGRONI
Bar of the month
Black Moon, White Cloud, Tequila Sunrise—this is not the weather report, but a few of the classic concoctions served at one of Munich’s top five bars, Negroni, which has just relocated to a new, larger location in Haidhausen. No newcomers to Munich’s nightlife scene, the award-winning Negroni team decided the wildly popular classic cocktail bar had more than outgrown its Wiener Platz digs after seven years. Those who voluntarily squashed themselves into its former space on busy weekend nights to sip sweet elixirs will appreciate the tastefully decorated, New York-style breathing room here. First-timers, be forewarned: this is not the place to play Stump the Bartender—these Italians know their mixology. Owners Mauro Mahjoub (Barmeister) and Michele Fiordoliva offer a menu of more than 130 cocktails—as well as dozens of other recipes they have committed to memory—and an extensive selection of Italian wines. If none of that whets your whistle, talk to self-described “martini freak” Mahjoub, who is constantly trying to find new ways to prepare this James Bond favorite. Order the Vesper Martini, the Martinez or his own invention, the exotic, cinnamon-laced Dusty Martini. Though, thankfully, Negroni has not ditched its signature popcorn maker, the bar now serves Italian specialties, including cheese and prosciutto plates, homemade pastas, salads and desserts, all reasonably priced between € 6 and € 10. During the watering hole’s Happy Hour, from 6 pm to 8 pm, most drinks are just € 5.30. Known for its most congenial staff, diverse crowd and insatiably cocktail-curious Barmeister—who is often overheard answering the most obscure questions on potables—Negroni has atmosphere, regardless of where it resides. <<<
